Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), or Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, is a hormonal disorder in which follicles fail to ovulate and collect cysts over the ovaries. Women with PCOS have unusually high levels of androgens (male type hormones) and frequently suffer with the following symptoms:

  • Weight gain
  • Excessive hair growth in the face and body
  • Irregular and infrequent periods or absent periods
  • Infrequent or absent ovulation
  • Infertility

Polycystic Ovary SyndromeDiagnosis and treatment of PCOS will of course require discussion with your GP and treatment is aimed at normalising hormone balance and reducing associated symptoms.

For most women, laser hair removal and electrolysis is a permanent depilation technique, as hair follicles are permanently destroyed. For women with PCOS laser hair removal and electrolysis is an effective treatment. However, as unwanted hair growth in women is hormonally driven, until hormone balances are resolved, hair removal may require on-going management. This is because the underlying hormone imbalance causes new hair follicles to be created at a much faster rate than non-PCOS women.

However, a course of treatments will significantly reduce the amount of hair present and slow down re-growth. For example, a woman shaving or plucking daily may find that after a course of treatments she will only require occasional treatments with no need for daily shaving in-between.
